LITERARY INTERPRETATION – FROM CINDIA

THEME: STORIES WITHIN STORIES
CHARACTER: LING

This painting is a layered expression of stories within stories and is filled with hidden meaning. The figure represents the importance of women. The catalogue of the Hermitage Museum tells that today’s religion is art; museums are our churches. The two ravens act as guardian angels.

At The Spice Temple, Ling, the tea sommelier, carries her precious tome of tea – rich in culture and rituals. She faces Russian guests with the protective birds and magic of the grand villa. Let art and stories beyond the obvious lead the way to new possibilities.

ARTIST’S INTERPRETATION OF TAMARA

The main idea of this painting is to recreate an icon that I have liked a lot since I was a child and it is a very powerful image. The pantocrator of the Apse of San Clemente de Tahull. But he wanted to use a woman instead of Jesus Christ. As an idea of the important role of women in the world. As a creative mother.

She, like Jesus Christ shows The Gospels, shows a catalog of a museum. Why? Because art is the religion of many of us today and museums are our churches.

Why in Russian? There is no special reason. I took the Catalog of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and gave it to the model. But don’t you think the cover is amazing?

Why the birds? The pantocrators were guarded (surrounded) by the 4 Evangelists. Sometimes represented by their symbols: An angel, a lion, a lamb and an eagle. I have put two birds. Two ravens as two guardian angels. Like two warriors.

BIOGRAPHY OF SALUSTIANO

Salustiano (born in 1965) is a master of portraiture on canvas and paper.

The Seville-born artist paints his models in the manner of the old masters – in front of monochrome backgrounds so that the viewer’s attention is concentrated on the sitter. As they stand alone, they confront the viewer with an enquiring gaze and encourage a silent dialogue.

In the same way that the works show the persons in a meditative pose, the pictures themselves have a magical attraction and invite the viewer to marvel at these almost unearthly beautiful beings.

Salustiano studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in his native city and is now an internationally successful artist.
